Jeden czasownik: JECHAĆ

The same prefixes again, now purely spatial. Once you see them as directions rather than as vocabulary, the whole system opens.

  1. pojechać

    verb · perfective

    EN
to go, to travel (by vehicle)
    RU
    поехать

    Pojechaliśmy nad morze na weekend.

We went to the seaside for the weekend.

The plain perfective. Polish insists on the difference between going on foot (iść) and going by vehicle — using the wrong one is instantly audible.

  2. przyjechać

    verb · perfective

    EN
    to arrive
    RU
    приехать

    Przyjadę o siódmej.

    I'll arrive at seven.

przy- is arrival at a point, the same przy- that attaches in przypisać.

  3. wyjechać

    verb · perfective

    EN
to leave, to depart; to move abroad
    RU
    уехать

    Wyjechał do Niemiec na stałe.

He's left for Germany for good.

wy- is out, as ever. Wyjechać on its own often implies emigration — the leaving that does not come back.

  4. dojechać

    verb · perfective

    EN
    to reach, to get there
    RU
    доехать

    Jak dojechać na dworzec?

How do I get to the station?

do- is up-to-a-limit. The single most useful question a newcomer asks, and it needs this verb.

  5. odjechać

    verb · perfective

    EN
    to depart (of a vehicle)
    RU
    отъехать, отойти (о поезде)

    Pociąg odjechał pięć minut temu.

The train left five minutes ago.

od- moves away from. Separately, odjechany in slang means wild or out-there, which is a long way from a timetable.

  6. zajechać

    verb · perfective

    EN
to pull up, to drive up to
    RU
    подъехать, заехать

    Taksówka zajechała pod dom.

The taxi pulled up outside the house.

za- goes behind or up to. Zajechać komuś drogę is to cut somebody up, which is the same movement seen from the other car.

  7. przejechać

    verb · perfective

    EN
to drive across; to run over
    RU
    проехать; переехать (сбить)

Przejechaliśmy cały kraj w jeden dzień.

We drove across the whole country in a day.

prze- crosses. It also means to run something over, so the object of the sentence decides how alarming it is.

  8. najechać

    verb · perfective

    EN
    to run into; to invade
    RU
    наехать; вторгнуться

    Najechał na barierkę.

    He ran into the barrier.

na- is onto. Also the historical word for an invasion, and — as in Russian — for verbally laying into someone.

  9. wjechać

    verb · perfective

    EN
    to drive in, to enter
    RU
    въехать

    Wjechaliśmy do tunelu.

    We drove into the tunnel.

w- is into. The road sign zakaz wjazdu — no entry — is this verb's noun, and now you can read it.

  10. zjechać

    verb · perfective

    EN
to drive down; to pull off
    RU
    съехать

Zjedź na pobocze i zatrzymaj się.

Pull over onto the verge and stop.

z- comes down or off. Zjazd is both a motorway exit and a downhill run.
