Przychodnia

Polish healthcare has its own vocabulary, and you will need it on a day you feel too rough to learn anything.

  1. przychodnia

    noun · feminine

    EN
    clinic, GP surgery
    RU
    поликлиника

Zapisałem się do przychodni na jutro.

I've booked in at the clinic for tomorrow.

The neighbourhood clinic, not a hospital — that is a szpital. From przychodzić, the place you come to.

  2. skierowanie

    noun · neuter

    EN
    referral
    RU
    направление

Bez skierowania nie przyjmą cię do specjalisty.

Without a referral a specialist won't see you.

The document that unlocks a specialist on the public system. Getting one is most of what a first appointment is for.

  3. recepta

    noun · feminine

    EN
    prescription
    RU
    рецепт

    Dostałem receptę na antybiotyk.

I got a prescription for an antibiotic.

Russian рецепт covers both the prescription and the cooking recipe. Polish splits them: recepta is medical only, and a cooking recipe is a przepis — which is also the word for a regulation.

  4. badanie

    noun · neuter

    EN
    test, examination
    RU
    обследование, анализ

    Muszę zrobić badania krwi.

I need to get blood tests done.

Usually plural for a set of tests: badania. Also research in the academic sense, from badać, to investigate.

  5. zwolnienie

    noun · neuter

    EN
    sick note; dismissal
    RU
    больничный; увольнение

Lekarz dał mi zwolnienie na tydzień.

The doctor signed me off for a week.

Two meanings and they are far apart: a sick note, and being let go from a job. Context has always resolved it and the ambiguity is still funny.

  6. ubezpieczenie

    noun · neuter

    EN
    insurance
    RU
    страховка

    Sprawdź, czy masz aktualne ubezpieczenie.

Check whether your insurance is current.

From bezpieczny, safe. Ubezpieczenie zdrowotne is health cover, and whether you have it is the first thing any receptionist asks.

  7. kolejka

    noun · feminine

    EN
    queue; a round of drinks
    RU
    очередь

Kolejka do lekarza jest na trzy miesiące.

The wait to see the doctor is three months.

A queue you stand in and a waiting list you join. Also a round of drinks and a narrow-gauge railway — a diminutive of kolej doing four jobs.

  8. dolegliwość

    noun · feminine

    EN
    complaint, ailment
    RU
    недомогание, жалоба (мед.)

    Jakie ma pan dolegliwości?

    What are your symptoms?

The word a doctor will actually open with. From dolegać — co panu dolega? is the same question put as a verb.

  9. apteka

    noun · feminine

    EN
    pharmacy
    RU
    аптека

    Apteka całodobowa jest przy dworcu.

The 24-hour pharmacy is by the station.

Same word as аптека, and a rare free one. Apteka dyżurna is the one on duty out of hours.

  10. na czczo

    phrase · adverb

    EN
    on an empty stomach, fasting
    RU
    натощак

Badanie krwi trzeba zrobić na czczo.

The blood test has to be done fasting.

A frozen phrase with an obsolete form of czczy, empty. You will meet it printed on a lab slip and nowhere else.
