Radość i spółka

The deck can complain fluently and has barely learned to be pleased. Ten ways to be glad in Polish, from the banana on your face to the stone off your heart.

  1. banan na twarzy

    phrase · noun, masculine, colloquial

    EN
a big grin (literally 'a banana on your face')
    RU
    улыбка до ушей

Wyszedł z rozmowy kwalifikacyjnej z bananem na twarzy.

He came out of the job interview grinning from ear to ear.

The shape of a banana is the shape of the grin. Mieć banana na twarzy, chodzić z bananem na twarzy — Russian stretches the smile to the ears, Polish bends it into fruit.

  2. cieszyć się na

phrase · verb, imperfective, + na + acc.

    EN
    to look forward to
    RU
    предвкушать, ждать с нетерпением

Bardzo się cieszę na ten wyjazd.

I'm really looking forward to this trip.

The pleasure in advance: cieszę się na urlop. Once marked as a German calque — sich freuen auf — but accepted in standard Polish. Nie mogę się doczekać + genitive is the version nobody objects to.

  3. w siódmym niebie

    phrase · adverb

    EN
    in seventh heaven
    RU
    на седьмом небе

Po zaręczynach była w siódmym niebie.

After the engagement she was in seventh heaven.

Russian and English share the same heaven, with one preposition to watch: w siódmym niebie, locative after w, where Russian says на.

  4. pękać z dumy

    phrase · verb, imperfective

    EN
    to burst with pride
    RU
    раздуваться от гордости

Rodzice pękali z dumy na jej obronie.

Her parents were bursting with pride at her thesis defence.

Pękać is to crack or burst, and z + genitive gives the cause, as in płakać ze śmiechu. Dumny is the plain adjective; this is the parent in the front row.

  5. zachwycony

    adjective · + instr.

    EN
    delighted, enchanted
    RU
    в восторге

    Jest zachwycona nowym mieszkaniem.

She's delighted with the new flat.

Instrumental, no preposition — zachwycony czymś, like Russian восхищён чем-то. Zachwyt is the noun, zachwycać się the verb, all a notch above zadowolony.

  6. wzruszony

    adjective · + instr.

    EN
    moved, touched
    RU
    растроганный, тронутый

    Byłam wzruszona tym filmem.

I was moved by that film.

Instrumental again: wzruszony czymś. The same verb gives wzruszyć ramionami, to shrug — one root for being moved to tears and for not caring at all.

  7. kamień spadł z serca

    phrase · verb, perfective

    EN
    a weight off one's mind
    RU
    камень с души упал

Kiedy wyniki okazały się dobre, kamień spadł mi z serca.

When the results came back fine, it was a weight off my mind.

Russian drops the stone from the soul, Polish from the heart — and the dative says whose: kamień spadł mi z serca. The feeling itself is ulga, relief.

  8. udany

    adjective

    EN
    successful, good (of an event)
    RU
    удачный, удавшийся

    To był naprawdę udany weekend.

That was a really good weekend.

From udać się. Poles grade weekends, trips and parties as udany or nieudany — and nieudany is how you call a thing a failure without blaming anyone for it.

  9. przypaść do gustu

phrase · verb, perfective, + dat.

    EN
to take someone's fancy, to be to someone's liking
    RU
    прийтись по вкусу

Nowe mieszkanie od razu przypadło nam do gustu.

We took to the new flat straight away.

The thing does the liking to you, in the dative: przypadło mi do gustu — the Russian construction exactly, with gust, taste, borrowed from Latin.

  10. polubić

    verb · perfective, + acc.

    EN
to take a liking to, to come to like
    RU
    полюбить (слабее); привязаться

    Szybko polubiłem nowych kolegów.

I quickly took to my new colleagues.

Russian полюбить can mean falling in love. Polish polubić is only coming to like — the coffee, the boss, the city. For love, zakochać się.
