Uprzejmie nie wierzę

Sarcasm and disbelief. The words look harmless; the intonation has already rolled its eyes — and several have close Russian twins.

  1. dobre sobie

    phrase · colloquial

    EN
that's a good one, as if
    RU
    ну да, конечно; вот ещё!

    On sam posprzątał? Dobre sobie.

He tidied up by himself? That's a good one.

A dismissive reaction to something absurd. It can come with a sarcastic smile; the flatter the tone, the sharper it cuts.

  2. wolne żarty

    phrase

    EN
    you must be joking
    RU
    шутить изволите

Trzy tysiące za naprawę? Wolne żarty.

Three thousand for the repair? You must be joking.

A dismissive 'you must be joking', for a price, a claim or a plan that seems absurd. Slightly old-fashioned, which makes it land harder.

  3. też mi

    phrase · colloquial

    EN
    some …, big deal
    RU
    тоже мне

Też mi fachowiec — trzy dni i kran dalej cieknie.

Some tradesman — three days and the tap still drips.

Russian тоже мне, word for word and with the same sneer. Then the noun you are dismissing: też mi problem, też mi bohater.

  4. ale jaja

    phrase · colloquial

    EN
you're kidding, unbelievable, what a laugh
    RU
    вот это номер, ржака

Ale jaja, szef przyszedł w dresie!

Unbelievable, the boss came in a tracksuit!

Jaja are eggs, and also — in slang — jokes, absurd situations and yes, the other thing. Here it is amused surprise. Fine among friends, a bit much in a meeting.

  5. szok i niedowierzanie

    phrase · often ironic

    EN
    shock and disbelief (often sarcastic)
    RU
шок и недоверие; иронично: вот так неожиданность

Pociąg znowu spóźniony. Szok i niedowierzanie.

The train is late again. Shock and disbelief.

A dramatic formula used sincerely in headlines and ironically everywhere else. After the tenth late train, it means nobody is surprised at all.

  6. gadaj zdrów

    phrase · colloquial

    EN
yeah, right; talk all you like (I don't believe you)
    RU
    ну-ну, рассказывай

Mówi, że rzuca palenie. Gadaj zdrów.

He says he's quitting smoking. Yeah, right.

Literally 'talk and stay healthy' — go on talking, it will do you good, it will not change my mind. Polite on the surface and entirely unbelieving underneath.

  7. brawo ty

    phrase · colloquial

    EN
    well done, you! (often sarcastic)
    RU
    молодец! (часто с сарказмом)

Zamknąłeś kluczyki w aucie? Brawo ty.

You locked the keys in the car? Well done, you.

Sincere or sarcastic — the situation and the intonation decide. After locked-in keys, it is not a compliment.

  8. no to pięknie

    phrase · colloquial, often ironic

    EN
    well, that's just great
    RU
    ну прекрасно, приехали

Pada, a ja bez parasola. No to pięknie.

It's raining and I've no umbrella. Well, that's just great.

Pięknie can praise, but after bad news no to pięknie is the sigh of 'well, that's just great'. No to klops is the same sigh with a meatball in it.

  9. łaski bez

    phrase · colloquial

    EN
    don't do me any favours
    RU
    ну и не надо; обойдусь

Nie chcesz iść? To łaski bez, pójdę sama.

You don't want to come? Don't do me any favours, I'll go on my own.

A colloquial twist on bez łaski — 'I can do without your favour'. Wounded pride after a refusal or help given with a sigh.

  10. nie opowiadaj bajek

    phrase · verb, imperfective

    EN
don't give me that, stop making things up
    RU
    не рассказывай сказки

Korki? Nie opowiadaj bajek, widziałem cię w kawiarni.

Traffic? Don't give me that, I saw you in the coffee shop.

The Russian image exactly, with the negated verb taking the genitive: bajek, not bajki. Grammar you can use to call someone a liar.
