University and exams, in the words a Polish student says every day — the resit, the year off and the word that ends at a housewarming.

  1. poprawka

    noun · feminine, colloquial

    EN
    a resit, a retake
    RU
    пересдача

Nie zdał statystyki, we wrześniu ma poprawkę.

He failed statistics, and he has a resit in September.

From poprawić, to correct. Also any small fix — kosmetyczna poprawka — but for a student it means the second chance, often at the end of the summer.

  2. dziekanka

    noun · feminine, colloquial

    EN
a leave of absence from university
    RU
    академический отпуск, академ

Wziął dziekankę i pojechał na rok do Norwegii.

He took a year off university and went to Norway.

From dziekan, the dean, who grants it: urlop dziekański. Russian shortens its own to академ; Polish students shorten theirs the same way.

  3. studia

    noun · plural

    EN
    university studies, a degree
    RU
    учёба в вузе, высшее образование

    Skończyłem studia dwa lata temu.

I finished university two years ago.

Plural only: być na studiach, iść na studia. The verb is studiować — uczyć się is homework and school, so uczę się na uniwersytecie sounds like a child who wandered in. RU учиться covers both.

  4. akademik

    noun · masculine

    EN
    hall of residence, dorm
    RU
    общежитие, общага

Przez pierwszy rok mieszkałem w akademiku.

I lived in halls for the first year.

A student dorm — RU общага. RU академик is a member of the Academy, and Polish has that sense too, but mieszkam w akademiku will never be taken for it. Dom studencki is the official name.

  5. zaliczenie

    noun · neuter

    EN
    a pass, course credit
    RU
    зачёт

Nie mam jeszcze zaliczenia z matematyki.

I haven't got my pass in maths yet.

RU зачёт exactly, graded or not, and the verb zaliczyć has escaped campus: zaliczyć wpadkę is to chalk up a blunder, zaliczyć glebę to hit the deck. Zaliczka, an advance, is a different word.

  6. kolokwium

    noun · neuter

    EN
a university test (during the semester)
    RU
    контрольная, коллоквиум

W piątek mam kolokwium z prawa.

I have a test in law on Friday.

A written or oral test during the semester; Russian контрольная is often the closest match, though коллоквиум can be one too. Students say kolos, and the last kolos before sesja is a fixed dread.

  7. sesja

    noun · feminine

    EN
    exam session
    RU
    сессия

W sesji nie mam czasu na nic.

During exam session I have time for nothing.

RU сессия, the same institution: the exam weeks after each semester, zimowa in late January, letnia in June. Sesja poprawkowa in September is the retakes, and the word alone excuses a cancelled evening.

  8. ściąga

    noun · feminine

    EN
    crib sheet, cheat sheet
    RU
    шпаргалка

    Wykładowca znalazł ściągę pod ławką.

The lecturer found a crib sheet under the desk.

From ściągać, to pull down — and to copy: ściągać na egzaminie is to cheat, ściągać z internetu to download. RU шпаргалка; also the quick-reference sheet on a developer's desk, which is not cheating.

  9. promotor

    noun · masculine

    EN
    thesis supervisor
    RU
    научный руководитель

Promotor kazał mi przepisać cały rozdział.

My supervisor told me to rewrite the whole chapter.

Three Russian words for one Polish one; nothing to do with promotion, which is awans. The finish is obrona, the defence — you obronić the thesis as if it were under attack, like RU защитить диплом.

  10. oblać

    verb · perfective

    EN
to fail (an exam); to celebrate with a drink
    RU
    завалить (экзамен); обмыть

Oblałem egzamin z fizyki, poprawka we wrześniu.

I failed the physics exam — retake in September.

Literally to pour over. Oblać egzamin is to fail it, RU завалить; zdać is the pass. And oblać nowe mieszkanie is to wet its head with vodka, RU обмыть — one verb for the disaster and the party.
