Umówić, odwołać, przełożyć
Arranging anything by phone or message — the doctor, the mechanic, the landlord. Booking, confirming, and the phrase for when something came up.
umówić się
verb · reflexive, perfective, + na + acc.
- EN
- to make an appointment, to arrange to meet
- RU
- договориться (о встрече), записаться
Umówiłem się na wizytę na czwartek rano.
I made an appointment for Thursday morning.
Umówić się na wizytę, z kimś, do lekarza — the all-purpose verb for fixing a time. Jestem umówiony means 'I have an appointment', not 'I have a contract'; umowa is the paper version of the same root.
zapisać się
verb · reflexive, perfective, + do + gen. / na + acc.
- EN
- to book in, to register, to sign up
- RU
- записаться
Zapisałam się do dentysty na piątek.
I booked in with the dentist for Friday.
RU записаться — same word, same job: do lekarza, na kurs, na siłownię. The receptionist's question back is na kiedy? Without się it is to write down or to save a file; zapisy are the enrolment itself.
zaklepać
verb · perfective, colloquial
- EN
- to bag, to book (informally)
- RU
- забить, застолбить
Zaklepałem nam stolik na ósmą.
I've booked us a table for eight o'clock.
Literally to tap or pat — as if you slapped the table to claim it. Zaklepać termin, zaklepać miejsce: the informal way to say you have secured it.
pasuje mi
phrase · verb
- EN
- it suits me, it works for me
- RU
- мне подходит, мне удобно
Wtorek mi pasuje, środa nie.
Tuesday works for me, Wednesday doesn't.
Pasować is to fit — a key, a jacket, a date. The question is pasuje ci? and the answer pasuje, nothing more. RU пасовать is to fold at cards or to give up: the Polish word is the opposite of backing out.
coś mi wypadło
phrase · colloquial
- EN
- something came up
- RU
- у меня кое-что случилось, возникли дела
Przepraszam, coś mi wypadło, możemy przełożyć?
Sorry, something's come up, can we reschedule?
Literally 'something fell out on me'. The standard way to cancel without giving details — and it is meant to spare everyone the details.
przełożyć
verb · perfective, + na + acc.
- EN
- to reschedule (earlier or later); to translate
- RU
- перенести; перевести (текст)
Musimy przełożyć spotkanie na przyszły tydzień.
We have to move the meeting to next week.
RU переложить moves an object; the Polish verb moves a date — na później or na wcześniej. It also translates a book, przełożyć na polski, and przełożony is your boss, the one placed above you.
przesunąć
verb · perfective
- EN
- to move (a time), earlier or later; to shift
- RU
- сдвинуть, перенести
Da się przesunąć wizytę o godzinę?
Can the appointment be moved by an hour?
The physical verb — przesunąć krzesło — used for time: o godzinę, na później, na wcześniej. RU передвинуть works the same way.
odwołać
verb · perfective
- EN
- to cancel (an appointment); to dismiss; to call off
- RU
- отменить; отозвать
Chciałbym odwołać jutrzejszą wizytę.
I'd like to cancel tomorrow's appointment.
RU отозвать is one job of three; the everyday one is cancelling — odwołać wizytę, lot, spotkanie. Anulować sounds like a booking system; odwołać is what you say. Odwołać się is to appeal a decision.
oddzwonić
verb · perfective, + do + gen.
- EN
- to call back
- RU
- перезвонить
Nie mogę teraz rozmawiać, oddzwonię do ciebie.
I can't talk now, I'll call you back.
Do + gen., not the RU dative: oddzwonię do pana. Od- is 'in return', as in odpisać, to write back, and oddać, to give back. Nie odbiera is why you need it: she is not picking up.
dać znać
phrase · verb, perfective
- EN
- to let someone know
- RU
- дать знать, сообщить
Daj znać, jak dojedziesz.
Let me know when you get there.
Daj znać closes half the messages in Poland; RU дать знать exists but sounds like a novel. Dative for the person: dam ci znać, dam znać kierownikowi. The formal twin is poinformować.
