Małe słowa

The particles. They carry almost no meaning alone and they are most of what makes speech sound native.

  1. no

    particle · colloquial

    EN
    well; yeah; go on
    RU
    ну

    No i co z tego?

    Well, so what?

The workhorse. Agreement, prompting, impatience and filler, decided entirely by tone. Same word and same job as RU ну.

  2. przecież

    particle

    EN
    but surely, after all
    RU
    ведь, же

    Przecież ci mówiłem!

    But I told you!

Appeals to something both of you already know. Leaving it out turns a reminder into an accusation.

  3. ależ

    particle

    EN
    why, but of course
    RU
    да что вы, ну конечно

    Ależ oczywiście, proszę siadać.

But of course, please sit down.

Emphatic and a touch formal. Ależ skąd is the warm way to wave away an apology.

  4. owszem

    particle

    EN
    yes indeed, actually yes
    RU
    да, конечно; вообще-то да

    Owszem, zgadzam się z tobą.

Yes, actually, I agree with you.

A considered yes, often conceding a point. Warmer than tak and much more adult.

  5. raczej

    adverb

    EN
    rather, more likely
    RU
    скорее, пожалуй

    Raczej nie dam rady.

    I probably won't manage it.

The standard soft no. Raczej nie is how a Pole declines without saying the word.

  6. zresztą

    particle

    EN
    anyway, besides
    RU
    впрочем, да и вообще

Zresztą i tak nie miałem czasu.

Besides, I didn't have time anyway.

Adds a final point that half-undercuts what came before. Extremely common in speech, rare in textbooks.

  7. bynajmniej

    adverb

    EN
    not in the least
    RU
    отнюдь (не)

    Bynajmniej nie jestem zły.

I'm not in the least angry.

Always negative. Poles themselves routinely misuse it as though it meant 'at least' — knowing the real sense will make you righter than half the room.

  8. wręcz

    adverb

    EN
    downright, outright
    RU
    прямо-таки, даже

    Był wręcz niegrzeczny.

    He was downright rude.

Escalates the word after it. Wręcz przeciwnie — quite the opposite — is the phrase you will meet it in most.

  9. otóż

    particle

    EN
    well then, so
    RU
    итак, так вот

Otóż to, dokładnie o to mi chodzi.

Exactly — that's precisely my point.

Opens an explanation. Otóż to on its own is a complete and rather satisfied 'precisely'.

  10. skądże

    particle

    EN
    not at all, certainly not
    RU
    да что ты, вовсе нет

    Skądże, wcale się nie gniewam.

Not at all, I'm not annoyed in the slightest.

Literally 'from where'. A warm, slightly old-fashioned denial — it reassures rather than contradicts.
