Zdrobnienia

Polish diminutives are not baby talk. They are a social instrument, and using them wrongly is more conspicuous than not using them at all.

  1. kawusia

    noun · feminine, diminutive

    EN
    a nice little coffee
    RU
    кофеёк

    Może kawusi przed wyjściem?

Fancy a quick coffee before we go?

Offering kawusia rather than kawa makes the offer warmer and more casual. From a waiter to a stranger it would sound over-familiar.

  2. piwko

    noun · neuter, diminutive

    EN
    a beer
    RU
    пивко

    Idziemy na piwko?

Shall we go for a beer?

The diminutive makes it casual and small — one beer, no commitment. Exactly the same move as RU пивко.

  3. chwilka

    noun · feminine, diminutive

    EN
    a moment
    RU
    минутка

    Chwilkę, zaraz przyjdę.

One moment, I'll be right there.

Chwileczkę is the double diminutive and is more apologetic still — the standard 'just a second' at a counter.

  4. pieniążki

    noun · plural, diminutive

    EN
    money
    RU
    денежки

    Trzeba zarobić na to pieniążki.

We'll need to earn the money for that.

Softens money into something manageable, and can be quietly sarcastic about a large sum. Read the tone.

  5. domek

    noun · masculine, diminutive

    EN
    a little house, a cottage
    RU
    домик

    Mają domek pod lasem.

They have a cottage by the woods.

Here the diminutive is literal rather than affectionate — a domek letniskowy is an actual category of building.

  6. rączka

    noun · feminine, diminutive

    EN
    little hand; a handle
    RU
    ручка

    Daj rączkę, przejdziemy przez ulicę.

Give me your hand, we'll cross the road.

To a child it is affectionate; to an adult it is either flirtatious or condescending. The word also means a handle, exactly as RU ручка does.

  7. słoneczko

    noun · neuter, diminutive

    EN
sunshine (as a term of endearment)
    RU
    солнышко

    Cześć, słoneczko.

    Hello, sunshine.

Identical in form and in feeling to RU солнышко. One of the few endearments that transfers without adjustment.

  8. kotek

    noun · masculine, diminutive

    EN
    kitten; darling
    RU
    котик

    Kotku, podaj mi telefon.

    Darling, pass me the phone.

The vocative kotku is what you actually hear. Between partners it is ordinary; to a colleague it is not.

  9. buźka

    noun · feminine, diminutive

    EN
    little face; a kiss (sign-off)
    RU
    мордашка; чмоки

    Buźka, do zobaczenia jutro!

    Kisses, see you tomorrow!

As a sign-off it means a kiss on the cheek, not a face. Common in messages between friends and family.

  10. serduszko

    noun · neuter, diminutive

    EN
    little heart
    RU
    сердечко

    Moje serduszko, nie martw się.

    Sweetheart, don't worry.

The diminutive of a diminutive-shaped word. Polish will happily stack these, and each layer adds warmth and subtracts formality.
