Charakter

Describing people is where B1 runs out first. Ten adjectives past miły and fajny.

  1. uparty

    adjective

    EN
    stubborn
    RU
    упрямый

    Jest uparty jak osioł.

He's as stubborn as a mule.

The simile is fixed: uparty jak osioł. Polish uses a donkey where English does too and Russian prefers баран, a ram.

  2. wyluzowany

    adjective · colloquial

    EN
    laid-back
    RU
    расслабленный, спокойный

    Nowy szef jest bardzo wyluzowany.

The new boss is very laid-back.

The adjective off wyluzować się, off luz. A three-word family you now have complete.

  3. przewrażliwiony

    adjective

    EN
    oversensitive, touchy
    RU
    мнительный, обидчивый

    Nie bądź taki przewrażliwiony.

    Don't be so touchy.

Wrażliwy is sensitive and is a compliment. The prze- makes it too much of a good thing — the same prefix that turns robić into overwork.

  4. zarozumiały

    adjective

    EN
    conceited, full of himself
    RU
    самонадеянный, заносчивый

    Zdolny, ale strasznie zarozumiały.

Talented, but terribly full of himself.

Literally over-thought-of-himself. Pewny siebie is self-confident and positive; this is where that tips over.

  5. wredny

    adjective · colloquial

    EN
    nasty, mean
    RU
    вредный, мерзкий

    Wredny typ, nie ufaj mu.

A nasty piece of work, don't trust him.

RU вредный can mean merely harmful or awkward. Polish wredny is a straight insult, never neutral.

  6. sumienny

    adjective

    EN
    conscientious
    RU
    добросовестный

    Sumienny pracownik, nigdy nie zawiódł.

A conscientious worker, never let anyone down.

From sumienie, conscience. The word you want in a reference letter, where solidny would sound like you were describing furniture.

  7. roztargniony

    adjective

    EN
    absent-minded, scatty
    RU
    рассеянный

    Jest roztargniony, ciągle gubi klucze.

He's scatty, always losing his keys.

Literally torn apart in several directions — roz- again, doing the same scattering it does in rozpisać.

  8. życzliwy

    adjective

    EN
    kindly, well-disposed
    RU
    доброжелательный

    Sąsiedzi są bardzo życzliwi.

    The neighbours are very kind.

From życzyć, to wish. It means actively wishing you well, which is warmer than miły — that only means pleasant.

  9. uczynny

    adjective

    EN
    helpful, obliging
    RU
    услужливый, отзывчивый

    Bardzo uczynny sąsiad, zawsze pomoże.

A very obliging neighbour, always ready to help.

From czynić, to do. Describes somebody who actually does things for people — where życzliwy, two words up this batch, only means wishing them well.

  10. ogarnięta

    adjective · colloquial

    EN
    on top of things (feminine)
    RU
    толковая, собранная

    Nowa koleżanka jest bardzo ogarnięta.

The new colleague is really switched on.

Included in the feminine on purpose: adjectives agree, and the compliment you learned in the masculine is the one you will most often need to say about a woman.
