Zakupy i opakowania

How things are packaged and counted. Ask for the wrong unit and you get a very different quantity.

  1. opakowanie

    noun · neuter

    EN
    packaging, a pack
    RU
    упаковка

    Opakowanie zbiorcze zawiera sześć sztuk.

    The multipack contains six units.

The generic. Everything below is a specific kind of it, and shops label by the specific one.

  2. słoik

    noun · masculine

    EN
    jar
    RU
    банка (стеклянная)

    Słoik ogórków kiszonych.

    A jar of pickled cucumbers.

Glass, with a lid. Słoiki is also mild slang for people who move to a big city and bring food from their parents in jars.

  3. puszka

    noun · feminine

    EN
    tin, can
    RU
    банка (жестяная)

    Puszka pomidorów.

    A tin of tomatoes.

Metal. Russian uses банка for both this and a jar; Polish insists on the difference between puszka and słoik.

  4. zgrzewka

    noun · feminine

    EN
    shrink-wrapped pack
    RU
    упаковка (термоусадочная)

    Kupiłem zgrzewkę wody.

I bought a pack of water.

Six bottles wrapped in plastic. There is no neat English word, and in Poland it is how water is bought.

  5. karton

    noun · masculine

    EN
    carton; cardboard box
    RU
    коробка, пакет (молока)

    Karton mleka i dwa jogurty.

A carton of milk and two yoghurts.

Both the drinks carton and the cardboard box. Kartonik is the small one with a straw that children take to school.

  6. kromka

    noun · feminine

    EN
    a slice of bread
    RU
    ломоть, кусок хлеба

    Dwie kromki chleba z masłem.

Two slices of bread and butter.

Only for bread. A slice of cake is kawałek and a slice of sausage is plasterek — three words where English has one.

  7. plasterek

    noun · masculine

    EN
    a thin slice
    RU
    ломтик

    Poproszę dziesięć plasterków szynki.

    Ten slices of ham, please.

For cold cuts and cheese. Also a sticking plaster, which is the same thin flat thing by another route.

  8. torebka

    noun · feminine

    EN
    a small bag, a sachet
    RU
    пакетик, сумочка

    Torebka herbaty.

    A teabag.

A teabag, a sachet and a handbag. Reklamówka is the carrier bag at the till, and it now costs money.

  9. na wagę

    phrase · adverb

    EN
    loose, by weight
    RU
    на развес

    Orzechy kupuję na wagę.

    I buy nuts loose.

The opposite of packaged. At a deli counter it is what distinguishes cutting to order from taking a sealed pack.

  10. paragon

    noun · masculine

    EN
    till receipt
    RU
    чек

    Zachowaj paragon na wypadek zwrotu.

Keep the receipt in case you return it.

The everyday receipt. A faktura is the formal invoice a business needs — and asking for one at the till changes what gets printed.
