Emocje i wymówki

How to complain, hedge and back out.

  1. chyba

    particle · adverb

    EN
    probably, I think
    RU
    наверное, кажется

Chyba nie zdążę na ostatni autobus.

I probably won't make the last bus.

The hedging particle. Poles use it constantly, and leaving it out makes a sentence sound blunt.

  2. niestety

    adverb

    EN
    unfortunately
    RU
    к сожалению

    Niestety, nie mogę dziś przyjść.

    Unfortunately, I can't come today.

Goes at the front and is slightly formal. In speech szkoda does the same work more warmly.

  3. wstyd

    noun · masculine

    EN
    shame, embarrassment
    RU
    стыд

Wstyd mi, że zapomniałem o twoich urodzinach.

I'm ashamed I forgot your birthday.

Used predicatively with the dative: wstyd mi, literally 'shame to me'. No verb required.

  4. olać

verb · perfective, colloquial, + acc.

    EN
to blow off, to not bother with
    RU
    забить (на что-то), наплевать

    Olałem dzisiaj siłownię.

I blew off the gym today.

Literally 'to pour over'. Crude enough that it does not belong in a work message.

  5. ziomek

    noun · masculine, slang

    EN
    buddy, homie
    RU
    братан, кореш

    Co słychać, ziomek?

    What's up, bro?

From ziemia — someone from your patch. Street register: use it only with people who used it first.

  6. wyluzować się

    verb · reflexive, perfective, colloquial

    EN
to chill out, to loosen up
    RU
    расслабиться

    Wyluzuj się, to tylko gra.

Chill out, it's just a game.

Built straight off luz. The imperative wyluzuj is one word and does the whole job.

  7. masakra

    noun · feminine, colloquial

    EN
    a disaster, a nightmare
    RU
    жесть, кошмар

Ten egzamin to była prawdziwa masakra.

That exam was a real disaster.

Pure hyperbole, applied to anything mildly bad. Casual register despite the violent literal sense.

  8. dorwać się

verb · reflexive, perfective, + do + gen.

    EN
    to get one's hands on
    RU
    дорваться (до чего-то)

    Wreszcie dorwałem się do komputera.

I finally got my hands on a computer.

Takes do + genitive, and carries the sense that you had been waiting for it.

  9. daj spokój

    phrase · colloquial

    EN
come on; give it a rest
    RU
    да ладно, брось

Daj spokój, to nie twoja wina.

Come on, it's not your fault.

Literally 'give peace'. Covers disbelief, protest and comfort — tone decides which.

  10. zajęty

    adjective

    EN
    busy; occupied
    RU
    занятый

    Jestem teraz bardzo zajęty.

    I'm very busy right now.

Also 'taken' of a seat and 'engaged' of a toilet, which is the version you meet first in a restaurant.
