What you say when someone has just told you something.

  1. serio

    particle · adverb

    EN
    seriously, for real
    RU
    серьёзно, на полном серьёзе

    Mówię serio, to nie żart.

    I'm serious, it's not a joke.

Works as both question and answer, complete in itself: Serio? — Serio.

  2. szkoda

    predicative · interjection

    EN
    a pity, too bad
    RU
    жаль, жалко

    Szkoda, że nie możesz przyjść.

    It's a pity you can't come.

Predicative — no verb needed. The most common expression of regret in the language.

  3. podobno

    adverb

    EN
    apparently, supposedly
    RU
    говорят, якобы

    Podobno jutro będzie padać.

Apparently it's going to rain tomorrow.

Marks hearsay explicitly, the way якобы does — but without якобы's scepticism.

  4. naprawdę

    adverb

    EN
    really, truly
    RU
    действительно, правда

Naprawdę mi przykro z tego powodu.

    I'm truly sorry about that.

Literally 'in truth'. Naprawdę? on its own is the standard expression of surprise.

  5. czaić

    verb · imperfective, colloquial

    EN
to get it, to catch on
    RU
    врубаться, понимать

    Czaisz, o co mi chodzi?

Do you get what I mean?

Slang. The reflexive czaić się keeps the original meaning — to lurk, to lie in wait.

  6. kumpel

    noun · masculine

    EN
    buddy, mate
    RU
    приятель, кореш

To jest mój najlepszy kumpel z pracy.

That's my best mate from work.

Sits between kolega and przyjaciel. A real friend, but not the one you call at 3am.

  7. lipa

    noun · feminine, colloquial

    EN
    a letdown, a sham
    RU
    фигня, лажа

Ten koncert to była kompletna lipa.

That concert was a total letdown.

Literally a linden tree. Nobody agrees why it came to mean a dud, and everybody uses it.

  8. fajrant

    noun · masculine, colloquial

    EN
quitting time, end of the workday
    RU
    конец рабочего дня, шабаш

    Mamy dziś wcześniejszy fajrant.

    We're finishing early today.

From German Feierabend. An industrial-era borrowing, still standard on any building site.

  9. martwić się

    verb · reflexive, imperfective, + o + acc.

    EN
    to worry about
    RU
    беспокоиться, волноваться

Nie martw się o mnie, dam sobie radę.

Don't worry about me, I'll manage.

Takes o + accusative. Nie martw się is the standard reassurance, and dam sobie radę the standard reply.

  10. w razie czego

    phrase

    EN
just in case, if anything comes up
    RU
    на всякий случай, если что

Zadzwoń do mnie w razie czego.

Call me if anything comes up.

Fixed phrase with the genitive frozen in. The exact counterpart of если что.
