Rozmowa

The connective tissue of a real conversation.

  1. dobra

    particle · colloquial

    EN
    okay, alright
    RU
    ладно, хорошо

    Dobra, zrobię to jutro.

    Alright, I'll do it tomorrow.

The feminine of dobry, frozen into a standalone particle. It closes discussions.

  2. przynajmniej

    adverb

    EN
    at least
    RU
    по крайней мере, хотя бы

    Zadzwoń przynajmniej, jak dojedziesz.

At least call when you arrive.

For concessions, not quantities. 'At least ten' is co najmniej dziesięć — a different phrase entirely.

  3. cholera

    interjection · colloquial

    EN
    damn, hell
    RU
    чёрт возьми

Cholera, znowu spóźniłem się na autobus.

Damn, I missed the bus again.

Literally the disease. Mild enough for most company, sharp enough to mean something.

  4. spadać

    verb · imperfective, colloquial

    EN
    to clear off, to bail
    RU
    сваливать, отваливать

    Spadaj, nie mam teraz czasu.

Clear off, I don't have time right now.

Literally 'to fall'. As a command, spadaj is rude without being obscene.

  5. wygadać się

    verb · reflexive, perfective, colloquial

    EN
to blab, to let it slip
    RU
    проболтаться

Obiecałeś nikomu nie mówić, a się wygadałeś.

You promised not to tell anyone, and you blabbed.

The reflexive flips it: wygadać is to say something fully, wygadać się is to say it by accident.

  6. przekonać się

    verb · reflexive, perfective, + o + loc.

    EN
    to find out for oneself
    RU
    убедиться (в чём-то)

Wkrótce sam się o tym przekonasz.

You'll find that out for yourself soon enough.

Takes o + locative. Without się it means to persuade someone else — the reflexive turns it inward.

  7. denerwować się

    verb · reflexive, imperfective

    EN
to get nervous; to get irritated
    RU
    нервничать

Nie denerwuj się, wszystko będzie dobrze.

Don't be nervous, everything will be fine.

One verb covers both anxiety and irritation, where Russian splits нервничать and злиться.

  8. zabawny

    adjective

    EN
    funny, amusing
    RU
    забавный, смешной

    Twój pies jest bardzo zabawny.

    Your dog is very funny.

Funny as in amusing. For funny-as-in-strange, Polish uses dziwny — the two never overlap.

  9. właściwie

    adverb

    EN
actually, as a matter of fact
    RU
    собственно говоря, вообще-то

Właściwie to nie mam pojęcia, co robić.

Actually, I have no idea what to do.

Hedges a correction you are making to yourself. Common in speech, and quite formal on the page.

  10. gapić się

verb · reflexive, imperfective, + na + acc.

    EN
    to stare at
    RU
    пялиться

Nie gap się tak na mnie.

Don't stare at me like that.

Takes na + accusative. A gap is a gawker, and the verb is unambiguously impolite.
