Za rok, przez rok, od roku

Time prepositions, the top Russian-speaker error. RU через is za, not przez — and RU за is w. Ten phrases where the preposition crosses the border and comes back meaning something else.

  1. za tydzień

phrase · adverb, za + acc.

    EN
in a week, a week from now
    RU
    через неделю

    Wracam za tydzień.

I'll be back in a week.

RU через is za here, never przez. Przez tydzień means throughout the week, so wrócę przez tydzień promises a week-long return. Za + accusative for any span: za godzinę, za rok.

  2. przez tydzień

phrase · adverb, przez + acc.

    EN
for a week, throughout a week
    RU
    неделю, в течение недели

    Przez tydzień nie miałem internetu.

I had no internet for a week.

Elapsed duration, the whole span: Russian drops the preposition and says неделю. Not RU через — that is za. Przez also means because of: spóźniłem się przez korki.

  3. od roku

phrase · adverb, od + gen.

    EN
for a year now, since a year ago
    RU
    уже год

    Mieszkam w Krakowie od roku.

I've been living in Kraków for a year.

Russian says уже год with no preposition; Polish has both już rok and od roku, and the second is the one you never produce. Od + genitive with the present tense: od roku, od dwóch lat, od dawna.

  4. do piątku

phrase · adverb, do + gen.

    EN
    by Friday; until Friday
    RU
    к пятнице; до пятницы

    Muszę to skończyć do piątku.

I have to finish it by Friday.

Polish has no к, so RU к пятнице and до пятницы both become do piątku — deadline and endpoint in one preposition. To include the day beyond doubt, say do piątku włącznie.

  5. na początku

phrase · adverb, na + loc.

    EN
    at the beginning, at first
    RU
    в начале, сначала

    Na początku nic nie rozumiałem.

At first I didn't understand anything.

RU в начале, Polish na: na początku roku, na początku było trudno. W początku does not exist, and the other end is not built the same way — pod koniec, not w końcu.

  6. pod koniec

phrase · adverb, pod + acc.

    EN
towards the end, at the end
    RU
    в конце, к концу

    Zapłacę pod koniec miesiąca.

I'll pay towards the end of the month.

RU в конце is pod koniec: pod koniec miesiąca, pod koniec dnia. W końcu on its own means finally — w końcu przyszedł — and for a date it survives mainly in w końcu XIX wieku.

  7. w weekend

    phrase · adverb, w + acc.

    EN
    at the weekend
    RU
    на выходных

    W weekend jadę do Gdańska.

I'm going to Gdańsk at the weekend.

RU на выходных, Polish w + accusative: w weekend, w sobotę, w tym tygodniu. Na weekend exists and means for the weekend — wyjechać na weekend — the same intended-duration na as na tydzień.

  8. na czas

phrase · adverb, na + acc.

    EN
    on time, in time
    RU
    вовремя

    Zdążyliśmy na czas.

    We made it in time.

RU вовремя is a single word; Polish builds it with na. Zdążyć na czas is the full phrase. The twin w porę means at the right moment rather than by the deadline.

  9. po godzinie

phrase · adverb, po + loc.

    EN
after an hour, an hour later
    RU
    через час (о прошлом)

    Po godzinie w końcu odebrał.

After an hour he finally picked up.

RU через час serves the future and the past; Polish splits them. Za godzinę counts from now, po godzinie from a moment in the story. Po + locative, the same po as po pracy, po obiedzie.

  10. w godzinę

    phrase · adverb, w + acc.

    EN
in an hour, within an hour (of work)
    RU
    за час

    Zrobiłem to w godzinę.

I did it in an hour.

The crossing: RU за час is w godzinę, RU через час is za godzinę — each lands on the other's preposition. W + accusative measures how long the job took; za says when it starts.
