Awizo

The post office and the parcel locker, in the words on the slip, the label and the screen. Where a Russian speaker reads 'take away', the Pole means 'collect'.

  1. przesyłka

    noun · feminine

    EN
    shipment, item of post, parcel
    RU
    отправление, посылка

    Twoja przesyłka czeka w paczkomacie.

Your parcel is waiting in the locker.

The word every tracking page uses, and it covers letters as well as boxes — RU посылка is only the box. Paczka is the parcel itself; przesyłka is anything in transit.

  2. nadać

    verb · perfective

    EN
to post, to send off (a parcel); to confer
    RU
    отправить (посылку); присвоить

    Chcę nadać paczkę do Mińska.

I want to post a parcel to Minsk.

The counter's verb: wysłać is fine in speech, but the form says nadanie and the receipt is potwierdzenie nadania. The same verb confers names and numbers: nadać imię, nadać numer PESEL.

  3. nadawca

    noun · masculine

    EN
    sender
    RU
    отправитель

    Nadawca musi podać adres zwrotny.

The sender has to give a return address.

Masculine despite the -a, like kierowca: ten nadawca. The other box on the form is odbiorca, the recipient — the pair sits on every label, every przelew and every e-mail header.

  4. list polecony

    phrase · noun, masculine

    EN
    registered letter
    RU
    заказное письмо

    Urząd wysłał decyzję listem poleconym.

The office sent the decision by registered post.

Polecony is literally 'recommended' — nothing to do with an order, whatever RU заказное suggests. This is how urząd, bank and court write to you: signed for, so delivery can be proved.

  5. awizo

    noun · neuter

    EN
delivery notice, 'while you were out' slip
    RU
    извещение (о посылке)

W skrzynce było awizo z poczty.

There was a delivery slip from the post office in the letterbox.

Neuter and it declines like okno: nie było awiza. Fourteen days to collect at the branch named on it, dowód in hand; the powtórne awizo after seven is a reminder, not a new deadline.

  6. odebrać

    verb · perfective

    EN
to collect, to pick up; to answer (the phone)
    RU
    забрать, получить; ответить (на звонок)

Odebrałem paczkę z paczkomatu w drodze do domu.

I picked up the parcel from the locker on the way home.

RU отобрать is to take away by force; Polish odebrać is the friendly opposite — you collect what is yours. Also the phone: nie odbiera means she is not picking up.

  7. doręczenie

    noun · neuter

    EN
delivery (of a letter); service (of a document)
    RU
    вручение, доставка

Termin liczy się od dnia doręczenia pisma.

The deadline runs from the day the letter is delivered.

The bureaucratic word, and the trap behind awizo: a registered letter from urząd or court that you never collect counts as doręczone after 14 days anyway, and the clock starts from that day.

  8. paczkomat

    noun · masculine

    EN
    parcel locker
    RU
    постамат

Wyślij to do paczkomatu, tak jest taniej.

Send it to a parcel locker, it's cheaper that way.

An InPost brand name that became the word: lockers on every estate, opened with a kod odbioru from the app or an SMS. RU постамат exists but is rarer; here most parcels go this way.

  9. za pobraniem

    phrase · adverb

    EN
    cash on delivery
    RU
    наложенным платежом

Wysyłka za pobraniem kosztuje 5 zł więcej.

Cash on delivery costs 5 zloty extra.

Pobranie here is the courier collecting your money at the door — the box to tick when you do not trust the shop. The same noun is a blood draw at the lab and a download on a screen.

  10. znaczek

    noun · masculine

    EN
    postage stamp
    RU
    марка (почтовая)

Poproszę znaczek na list do Niemiec.

A stamp for a letter to Germany, please.

RU значок is a badge or a pin; the Polish stamp is a little znak, and the badge is odznaka or przypinka. Marka in Polish is a brand — three languages, three words, one circle.
