Kasownik

Buses and trams, from the timetable to the inspector. The validator is a kasownik, 'cancelling' a ticket brings it to life, and the fare-dodger rides na gapę.

  1. rozkład jazdy

    phrase · noun, masculine

    EN
    timetable
    RU
    расписание

    Sprawdź rozkład jazdy w aplikacji.

Check the timetable in the app.

Rozkład on its own is a layout, a distribution or, unhelpfully, decay; only with jazdy is it a timetable. Printed per line on every stop, and the app the whole country uses is jakdojade.

  2. gapowicz

    noun · masculine

    EN
    a fare-dodger
    RU
    безбилетник, заяц

Kanar złapał trzech gapowiczów w jednym tramwaju.

The inspector caught three fare-dodgers on one tram.

The person who travels na gapę, without a valid ticket — Russian безбилетник, or colloquially заяц. The phrase once also covered slipping into a theatre without paying.

  3. tłok

    noun · masculine

    EN
    a crush, a crowd
    RU
    давка, толчея

W godzinach szczytu w metrze jest straszny tłok.

At rush hour there's a terrible crush on the metro.

Related to tłoczyć się, to crowd together. Russian толпа is the crowd; tłok is what the crowd does to you at eight in the morning.

  4. przystanek na żądanie

    phrase · noun, masculine

    EN
    request stop
    RU
    остановка по требованию

To przystanek na żądanie, naciśnij przycisk.

It's a request stop, press the button.

The bus sails past unless someone presses the button inside or waves from the kerb; marked NŻ on the timetable. RU has the concept, but outside city centres every second stop here is one.

  5. pętla

    noun · feminine

    EN
    terminus, turning loop
    RU
    конечная (остановка)

Ten autobus jedzie do pętli na Bemowie.

This bus goes to the terminus in Bemowo.

Literally 'loop', because trams turn round on one; it is the terminus on maps, in announcements and on the front of the bus. RU петля is only ever a loop — the terminus is конечная.

  6. bilet okresowy

    phrase · noun, masculine

    EN
    season ticket, travel pass
    RU
    проездной

Mam bilet okresowy na 30 dni.

    I have a 30-day travel pass.

Lives on a karta miejska or in an app, and the inspector reads the chip. Students under 26 pay half in most cities — ulga studencka — but only with a valid legitymacja in the same pocket.

  7. kasownik

    noun · masculine

    EN
    ticket validator
    RU
    валидатор, компостер

    Kasownik przy drzwiach nie działa.

The validator by the door doesn't work.

The yellow box by the door. In most cities a single ticket is dead until it has been through one; an untouched paper bilet in your pocket is no ticket at all. Nothing to do with a cashier.

  8. skasować

    verb · perfective

    EN
to validate (a ticket); to delete
    RU
    прокомпостировать (билет); удалить

    Skasuj bilet zaraz po wejściu.

Validate your ticket as soon as you get on.

Two opposite jobs: skasować plik deletes it, skasować bilet brings it to life. RU кассировать belongs in a courtroom; here it is what the sticker above the yellow box orders you to do.

  9. kanar

    noun · masculine, colloquial

    EN
    ticket inspector
    RU
    контролёр

    Na następnym przystanku wsiedli kanary.

Ticket inspectors got on at the next stop.

Slightly rude, from kanarek: the yellow armbands inspectors once wore. Politely kontroler. They board in pairs in plain clothes, and the penalty is an opłata dodatkowa, not a mandat.

  10. jechać na gapę

    phrase · verb, imperfective

    EN
to ride without a ticket, to fare-dodge
    RU
    ехать зайцем

Jechał na gapę i wpadł na kontroli.

He rode without a ticket and got caught in an inspection.

To travel without a valid ticket: Russian ехать зайцем. The passenger is a gapowicz. Linking it to gapa, a scatterbrain, makes a good mnemonic, though not a proven origin.
