Ziemio, otwórz się

Embarrassment, your own and other people's. The gaffe, the blush, the wish to vanish — and a Polish verb for being ashamed on someone else's behalf.

  1. palnąć gafę

    phrase · verb, perfective, colloquial

    EN
to put your foot in it, to drop a clanger
    RU
ляпнуть что-то не к месту, допустить бестактность

Zapytałem, kiedy termin porodu. Nie była w ciąży. Palnąłem gafę.

I asked when the baby was due. She wasn't pregnant. I put my foot in it.

Gafa is the gaffe; palnąć is to blurt, or to hit — both apply. Palnąć alone works too: ale palnąłem!

  2. spalić buraka

    phrase · verb, perfective, colloquial

    EN
to go bright red, to blush
    RU
    покраснеть как рак

Kiedy szef mnie pochwalił, spaliłem buraka.

When the boss praised me, I went bright red.

Literally 'to burn a beetroot'. Polish blushes both ways — czerwony jak burak and czerwony jak rak — but only the beetroot gets its own slangy verb.

  3. zapaść się pod ziemię

    phrase · verb, perfective

    EN
to wish the ground would swallow you up
    RU
    провалиться сквозь землю

    Najchętniej zapadłbym się pod ziemię.

I wish the ground would swallow me up.

Russian falls through the earth, Polish sinks under it. Chciałbym się zapaść pod ziemię is the wish; chciałem się zapaść pod ziemię tells the story afterwards.

  4. świecić oczami

    phrase · verb, imperfective, colloquial

    EN
to have to face the embarrassment (often for someone else)
    RU
    краснеть за кого-то, отдуваться

Szef nie przyszedł, a ja musiałem świecić oczami przed klientem.

The boss didn't turn up, and I had to face the client and apologise for him.

Literally 'to shine with your eyes' — standing there, visibly ashamed, while the guilty party is elsewhere. Świecić oczami za kogoś is the phrase for every junior colleague's worst meeting.

  5. wyjść na głupka

    phrase · verb, perfective, colloquial

    EN
to end up looking like an idiot
    RU
    выглядеть дураком, выставить себя дураком

Nie przygotowałem się i wyszedłem na głupka.

I didn't prepare and ended up looking like a fool.

Wyjść na + accusative is the impression you end up making: wyjść na głupka, wyjść na chama. Learn the pattern and the insult comes free.

  6. strzelić sobie w kolano

    phrase · verb, perfective, colloquial

    EN
to shoot yourself in the foot
    RU
    выстрелить себе в ногу

Tą wypowiedzią strzelił sobie w kolano.

With that statement he shot himself in the foot.

Same self-sabotage, different body part: English and Russian aim at the foot, Polish at the knee. A favourite of political commentators.

  7. wtopa

    noun · feminine, slang

    EN
    a blunder, an embarrassing slip
    RU
    косяк, прокол, лажа

Wysłałem mema na czat z klientem. Ale wtopa.

I sent a meme to the client chat. What a blunder.

Related to wtopić się. Ale wtopa! is the standard reaction to an embarrassing slip, and the verb works too: wtopiłem na rozmowie kwalifikacyjnej.

  8. zaliczyć glebę

    phrase · verb, perfective, slang

    EN
to take a tumble, to hit the deck
    RU
    навернуться, грохнуться

Pośliznąłem się na lodzie i zaliczyłem glebę.

I slipped on the ice and hit the deck.

Gleba is soil, and zaliczyć is what you do to an exam: tick it off. So you have 'passed the ground'. Mostly a real fall; for the social kind, see wtopa.

  9. zbłaźnić się

    verb · reflexive, perfective

    EN
to make a fool of yourself
    RU
    опозориться, сесть в лужу

Nie chcę się zbłaźnić przed całym zespołem.

I don't want to make a fool of myself in front of the whole team.

From błazen, the jester: to turn yourself into the court fool. Standard Polish, not slang — usable in an email apologising for yesterday.

  10. głupio mi

    phrase · predicative

    EN
I feel awkward, I feel bad (about it)
    RU
    мне неловко

Głupio mi, że zapomniałem o twoich urodzinach.

I feel bad that I forgot your birthday.

Literally 'it is stupid to me'. It is not calling anyone stupid: głupio mi is the everyday word for неловко, and głupio wyszło — that came out awkwardly — the apology after it.
