Mózg chwilowo niedostępny

The brain, temporarily out of service. Blanking, zoning out, daydreaming and talking nonsense — with blue almonds where Russian has clouds.

  1. odlecieć

    verb · perfective, colloquial

    EN
to zone out, to drift off
    RU
    улететь, выпасть из реальности

Sorry, odleciałem na chwilę. Możesz powtórzyć?

Sorry, I zoned out for a second. Can you repeat that?

Literally to fly away, and in the office it means your mind did. Also used of being blissfully relaxed or high — context sorts out which flight it was.

  2. kojarzyć

verb · imperfective, + acc.; colloquial in the recognition sense

    EN
to recognise, to vaguely remember; to associate
    RU
    припоминать, смутно знать; ассоциировать

Kojarzę tę twarz, ale nie pamiętam imienia.

I know the face, but I can't remember the name.

Kojarzysz go? — do you know who he is? Kojarzę is 'I know who you mean', somewhere between припоминаю and знаю. The other sense, to link ideas, gives skojarzenie, an association.

  3. mieć zaćmienie

    phrase · verb, imperfective, colloquial

    EN
    to have a mental blank
    RU
всё вылетело из головы, затмение нашло

Na egzaminie miałem zaćmienie i nic nie pamiętałem.

In the exam my mind went blank and I remembered nothing.

Zaćmienie is an eclipse — zaćmienie słońca — so the light simply goes out for a while. Russian затмение does the same double duty.

  4. stracić wątek

    phrase · verb, perfective

    EN
to lose the thread (of what you were saying)
    RU
    потерять нить (разговора)

Przepraszam, straciłem wątek. O czym mówiłem?

Sorry, I've lost the thread. What was I saying?

Wątek is the thread of a story — and of a forum or a chat, where nie na temat, off-topic, is its enemy. Russian loses a нить; Polish loses a plot line.

  5. mieć długi zapłon

    phrase · verb, imperfective, colloquial

    EN
to be slow on the uptake
    RU
быть тугодумом, до него доходит как до жирафа

Zrozumiał żart dopiero po godzinie — ma długi zapłon.

He got the joke an hour later — he's slow on the uptake.

Literally 'to have a long ignition', like an old engine that turns over and over before it starts. Russian waits for the giraffe; Polish waits for the car.

  6. zamulać

    verb · imperfective, slang

    EN
to be slow on the uptake; to drag
    RU
    тупить, тормозить

    Sorry, dziś zamulam, nie spałem.

    Sorry, I'm slow today, I didn't sleep.

From muł, silt: a river choking on mud. People zamulają, so do laptops and long meetings. The adjective zamulony is how you feel after lunch.

  7. głowić się

verb · reflexive, imperfective, + nad + instr.

    EN
to rack your brains (over something)
    RU
    ломать голову

Głowię się nad tym od rana.

I've been racking my brains over it since morning.

A verb made straight out of głowa. Russian breaks the head; Polish just makes it work — and the problem takes nad with the instrumental.

  8. myśleć o niebieskich migdałach

    phrase · verb, imperfective

    EN
to daydream, to think of pleasant nothings
    RU
    витать в облаках

Zamiast słuchać, myślał o niebieskich migdałach.

Instead of listening, he was daydreaming.

Niebieski here is the old 'heavenly', and almonds were once a luxury — so these are delights out of reach. Bujać w obłokach offers the clouds Russian витать в облаках knows.

  9. pleść trzy po trzy

    phrase · verb, imperfective, colloquial

    EN
    to talk nonsense, to ramble
    RU
    нести чушь, молоть вздор

Nie słuchaj go, plecie trzy po trzy.

Don't listen to him, he's talking rubbish.

Pleść means to weave or plait, and trzy po trzy is simply part of the fixed phrase for talking nonsense. Pleść bzdury is the plainer version.

  10. plątać się w zeznaniach

    phrase · verb, imperfective, colloquial

    EN
to contradict yourself, to get your story tangled
    RU
    путаться в показаниях

Pytałam, gdzie był wieczorem, a on zaczął się plątać w zeznaniach.

I asked where he'd been that evening and he started contradicting himself.

Courtroom Polish brought home, exactly like Russian путаться в показаниях. Used of anyone whose story changes with each telling — suspects, teenagers and partners back at 3 a.m.
