Czasowniki mowy

Ten ways to say that somebody said something. Powiedzieć is doing far too much work in your Polish.

  1. twierdzić

    verb · imperfective

    EN
    to claim, to maintain
    RU
    утверждать

    Twierdzi, że nic nie wiedział.

    He claims he knew nothing.

Reports a claim without endorsing it. Using it about your own view sounds oddly defensive — for that use uważam.

  2. przyznać

    verb · perfective

    EN
    to admit; to award
    RU
    признать; присудить

    Przyznaję, że się myliłem.

    I admit I was wrong.

Two lives: admitting a fault, and awarding a grant or a prize. Przyznać się is to confess specifically.

  3. zaprzeczyć

    verb · perfective, + dat.

    EN
    to deny, to contradict
    RU
    отрицать, опровергнуть

    Zaprzeczył wszystkim zarzutom.

    He denied all the accusations.

Takes the dative, which surprises people: zaprzeczyć CZEMUŚ. The noun zaprzeczenie is also grammatical negation.

  4. wtrącić

    verb · perfective

    EN
    to interject, to cut in
    RU
    вставить (реплику)

    Można coś wtrącić?

    May I come in here?

Wtrącić się is to butt into somebody else's business, which is a rebuke rather than a request.

  5. napomknąć

    verb · perfective, + o + loc.

    EN
    to mention in passing
    RU
    упомянуть вскользь

Napomknął o tym na końcu spotkania.

He mentioned it in passing at the end of the meeting.

Carries the implication that it was said lightly on purpose. Wspomnieć is the neutral 'to mention'.

  6. podkreślić

    verb · perfective

    EN
    to emphasise; to underline
    RU
    подчеркнуть

    Podkreślił, że termin jest nieprzekraczalny.

He stressed that the deadline is final.

Literally to draw a line under, exactly as RU подчеркнуть does. One of the free ones.

  7. zastrzec

    verb · perfective

    EN
to stipulate, to add a caveat
    RU
    оговорить, оговориться

Zastrzegł, że to tylko wstępne dane.

He stipulated that the figures are provisional.

Zastrzeżenie is the caveat itself, and z zastrzeżeniem, że — with the proviso that — is how contracts hedge.

  8. sprostować

    verb · perfective

    EN
    to correct (a statement)
    RU
    поправить, опровергнуть

    Muszę sprostować jedną rzecz.

I need to correct one thing.

For correcting the record rather than a mistake in an exercise — that is poprawić. Sprostowanie is a published correction.

  9. zapewnić

    verb · perfective

    EN
    to assure; to provide
    RU
    заверить; обеспечить

    Zapewnił mnie, że wszystko gra.

He assured me everything was fine.

Assuring a person and providing a thing are the same verb, and the case tells you which: zapewnić kogoś versus zapewnić coś.

  10. wypowiedzieć się

    verb · reflexive, perfective

    EN
to give one's view, to comment
    RU
    высказаться

    Każdy miał okazję się wypowiedzieć.

Everybody had a chance to speak.

The reflexive of the verb behind wypowiedzenie, the notice period. Same root, two entirely separate lives.
